Maslow in the Speech Room

Sometimes it really helps to take a step back.

When I realized my student was hungry, I stopped our language attributes lesson and took care of him.

When I learned my student became homeless, I didn’t work on context clues that day. I focused on our relationship.

While my first grader moved through foster care, she needed to improve her speech sounds. First I focused on creating a safe space and providing her with something consistent in her life.

I created a special version of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs for schools because I feel it’s critically important to meet our students where they are. After all, how can we effectively treat speech and language without seeing the whole child?
