PLEASE DON’T LEAVE MY VOICE ON THE SHELF – AAC ACCESS

Everyone deserves a voice – all day and everyday. After writing a poem advocating for widespread improvements with AAC abandonment, I received this video from an incredible SLP and her wonderful students in South Africa to share with you.

This caring community hopes that their powerful video will provide you with a tool to help you advocate for your own students.

I want you to have these free AAC Advocacy Posters! Sign up to receive 3-5 monthly e-mails with therapy tips, blog posts, resource updates and access to the subscriber freebie library!

THE STORY BEHIND THE VIDEO

Meet the SLP

This powerful video was sent to me by Zinette Cronje, an inspiring SLP who works at New Hope School in Pretoria, South Africa.  She found my poem Please Don’t Leave My Voice on the Shelf on Teachers Pay Teachers and asked if she could use it with her students. Her passion for her work was immediately clear to me as she spoke about how she supports her students’ needs.

Zinette works with an amazing team of SLPs whose support played a vital role in bringing this video to life. Each day they work with multiple AAC communication groups with a wide range of needs during play-based communication lessons in English and Afrikaans.

Please note that the term “non-speaking” as opposed to “nonverbal,” is the terminology currently being used in posts.

The majority of Zinette’s students use AAC devices at school only and do not have their own devices for use at home and in the community. In addition, there is currently no funding available for group activities.

If you are interested in learning ways to make an impact and support this special group of children by providing a communication aid or making a monetary donation, please contact Claudia at creativespeechlab@gmail.com for more information.

All donors will receive a heartfelt thank you as well as an opportunity to be prominently featured on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and this webpage.

Thank you for taking the time to share this video and advocate for consistent AAC access!
