How to Use Personalization When Teaching Context Clues

If you’ve looked at context clues examples, you’ve probably noticed that most of these sentences are a bit, shall we say…unmemorable. (Example: “The man felt lethargic and decided to take a nap.”)

Although context clues provide helpful hints to students about the meaning of unfamiliar words, have you ever wondered how likely are they to remember the vocabulary?

That’s why I came up with a system to personalize context clues activities!

Today I’m sharing just how to do that with you! Not only will your students walk away with a deeper and more lasting understanding of novel vocabulary after using context clues strategies, they’ll also feel more invested in your work together!

Let’s begin with the example for the word “lethargic” that I shared above.

Take a look at the first sentence pictured above in which a student filled in the first blank.

Did you notice how the student wrote that playing soccer at 8 A.M. was tiring?

So, how about this PERSONALIZED sentence?

“I felt lethargic when I played soccer at 8 A.M.”

This simple personalization strategy is a powerful one to help students use context clues to understand AND connect with new vocabulary in a meaningful way!

This approach can even extend beyond personal sentences and stories. Try creating personalized, context clues vocabulary cards for your students to bring home!

Vocabulary cards don’t have to be limited to simple word and definition pairings. Add a personal question so that students form their own personal context to better understand the word!
