3 Ways Every SLP Can Prepare Older Students for Summer Break

Today I’m sharing 3 tips for how to take advantage of the carryover opportunities summer break presents. These ideas are easy to implement and can go a long way in helping your students grow their speech and language skills during the summer!

1. Language Goals

One of my favorite things to share with parents and caregivers at annual review meetings is my handout listing tips about how they can support their child’s speech and language skills at home.

One of my favorite tips is co-reading for students of ALL ages. I always encourage parents and caregivers to read the same book (even if not at the same time) and to discuss it, which will bring so many language skills to life.

2. Articulation Goals

I’ve found that it makes an enormous difference to identify common phrases, names and objects that your students say outside of the speech room that also happen to contain their target sounds.

For this reason, I created carryover graphic organizers that students can fill out as they prepare for summer break and reflect on as they use the words and phrases we outlined together.

3. Multiple Goals

At the end of the school year, I love to print out my fill-in-the-blank sticky notes to send home. This way, students can easily practice words, refer to strategies and remain mindful of their goals!
